Task Force Action Fund applauds Miami-Dade County Commission’s approval of
domestic partner ordinance

WASHINGTON, May 20 — The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Action Fund applauds the Miami-Dade County Commission’s passage today of the Domestic Partners and Family Health Coverage Ordinance. The measure was approved by an 8–4 vote. Miami-Date County joins nearly two dozen other local jurisdictions in Florida that offer domestic partner benefits.

This law, and others like it throughout the state, may be in jeopardy if Amendment 2, which will be on the November ballot, passes. The proposed amendment seeks to preclude the recognition of various family relationships, including same-sex marriage, civil unions, and possibly domestic partnerships for both opposite-sex and same-sex couples.

Statement by Rea Carey, Acting Executive Director
National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Action Fund

“Congratulations to the people of Miami-Dade County, our local partner SAVE and the supportive commissioners who made this tremendous victory possible. Local governments continue to lead the way in Florida in securing the protections their communities need and deserve, even as opponents of LGBT equality continue their efforts to pass Amendment 2 this November.

“Let the hard work and unflinching progress of Miami-Dade County remind us all why it is so important that we are working together to defeat this mean-spirited amendment this November.”
