Washington, D.C., May 20, 2016—On Thursday the Oklahoma legislature passed a bill that would make it a felony for healthcare providers to perform an abortion in the state. The bill now goes to Governor Mary Fallin for consideration.
“This is a blatant attack on fundamental rights and modern medicine. People across these United States have rights guaranteed by the US Constitution and the people of Oklahoma should not be treated any differently. Physicians should be able to provide the health care their patients need; they shouldn’t be criminalized for simply practicing medicine. We urge Governor Fallin to veto this appalling bill,” said Candace Bond-Theriault, Policy Counsel, National LGBTQ Task Force Action Fund.
If signed into law, this provision would also restrict any physician who performs an abortion from obtaining or renewing a license to practice medicine in Oklahoma.
