Washington, DC, January 8, 2019: The National LGBTQ Task Force Action Fund supports the For the People Act, H.R. 1, as part of the 100+ member Declaration for American Democracy coalition. The House of Representatives is giving the restoration of our democracy top billing with the designation of H.R. 1, the first bill of the session. The bill is designed to curtail big business influence and expand voter participation with provisions that would ban voter roll purges, expand online voter registration, restore the vote to formerly incarcerated individuals, create a public matching fund for small donors, and mandate independent Congressional redistricting.
“For far too long, voter suppression, dark money in politics, and gerrymandered districts have gone unchecked in our society, and this bill takes important steps to end those practices. Now is the time for Congress to act and for a new level of collective actions to be taken on all our parts. Members of the LGBTQ community have much at stake and we are pledging our commitment to this effort long term. Our democracy works best when everyone’s voice is heard, everyone participates, and every vote is counted,” said Rea Carey, executive director of the National LGBTQ Task Force Action Fund. ”
Carey will be speaking at the Declaration for American Democracy coalition’s press conference Wednesday, January 9 at 12 pm at the House Triangle, southeast side of the U.S. Capitol.
