MIAMI, FL, April 9, 2015 — The Florida State Senate has nixed blanket-discrimination from an adoption bill that was previously passed by the Florida State House of Representatives. Like Indiana’s controversial discrimination law, the bill would have legalized broad discrimination—in this case against parents and prospective parents of adopted children—based on religious belief. If passed, the bill would have made it possible to discriminate against a person because of their sexual orientation, gender identity, race and other factors.

“This is good news for parents across our great state. Using faith as an excuse to denigrate loving same-sex parents is not truly about religious liberty–it’s about legitimizing prejudice to justify discrimination,” said Bradley Carlson, Florida resident and board member of the National LGBTQ Task Force Action Fund. “We thank the Florida Senate for being on the right side of history and for standing up for all parents and families. And we thank our partners at Equality Florida for all their hard work to tackle discrimination.”

Last week the National LGBTQ Task Force Action Fund launched a new campaign called “Nix It Now” (#NixItNow) urging politicians to reject Indiana-style blanket discrimination laws. The organization is encouraging all to visit their facebook page to share the “Nix it Now” graphic.
