Press Conference Today at 12:30 p.m. ET at Cork Market

Washington, DC, June 23, 2014–Today, Tuesday, June 23, the National LGBTQ Task Force Action Fund will join U.S. Representative Holmes Norton (Washington, DC), NARAL Pro-Choice America, ACLU of the Nation’s Capital, local community and small business leaders at a press conference to support the over one hundred small business owners who vocally oppose Congressional action to overturn two landmark non-discrimination bills in Washington, D.C. In December, the Washington, D.C. Council unanimously passed two non-discrimination laws—The Reproductive-Health Non-Discrimination Amendment Act (RHNDAA) and the Human Rights Amendment Act (HRAA)—that prevent discriminatory treatment of employees and students. Recently, anti-choice politicians in Congress—who are not accountable to District residents—introduced legislation to nullify the RHNDAA.

“Today, as we join a large and diverse coalition of groups and people committed to advancing basic rights for all, we send a message that is loud and clear to Congress: you can’t use faith as an excuse to force your prejudices on us; you can’t stand in the way of full freedom, justice, and equality for all; and you can’t stop progress,” said Rea Carey, Executive Director of the National LGBTQ Task Force.

WHAT: Joint Press Conference with community leaders, community activists & small business owners discussing the importance of non-discrimination protections for the employees and residents of Washington, D.C.

Eleanor Holmes Norton, Sasha Bruce, Senior VP of Campaigns and Strategy for NARAL Pro-Choice America, Monica Hopkins-Maxwell, Executive Director of the ACLU of the Nation’s Capital, and Khalid Pitts, owner and operator of Cork Market in D.C.
